The EN388:2003 standard was renamed EN388:2016, the year of its revision. The reason for the change is due to discrepancies in the results between laboratories in the blade shear test, the COUP TEST. Materials with high shear rates produce a dulling effect on circular blades, which distorts the results.

The new regulations were published in November 2016, while the previous ones dated back to 2003. During these 13 years, significant innovations in the materials used to manufacture cut-resistant gloves have necessitated changes to the testing procedures to more rigorously measure protection levels.
